Karen's Story

In a desperate situation, grandmother and granddaughter find help

Karen and her granddaughter found the safety and shelter they needed at Samaritan House.

Karen was not sure where to go. Suddenly losing her job has a certified nurse assistant, she had no family and no emergency funds to support her. An already desperate situation became more stressful knowing her young granddaughter relied on her for food and a home. Now they faced homelessness.

Every night, Karen picked a different parking lot. She parked the truck and they slept inside until the morning light woke them. She continued to drop her granddaughter off at school. But when the nights turned cold, Karen had to think of a different plan.

She then discovered Samaritan House and applied for the family program. The staff helped the grandmother find a new job and save money for a home. Karen felt relieved knowing they had food and shelter—and a safe place to stay at night.
